About the Study
Who runs this study?
This is a multi-site study being conducted by the Sleep and Neurodevelopment Service at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Dr. Ashura Buckley is the Principal Investigator, and she is a pediatric neurologist and sleep medicine research physician. Dr. Buckley is particularly interested in the role of sleep, both normal and abnormal, in shaping the developing brain. The ultimate goal of her research is to work collaboratively to elucidate underlying aberrant, sleep-mediated neurotransmission early in the course of neurodevelopment that might offer potential therapeutic targets.
What is this study about?
The purpose of this research study is to address a knowledge and information gap in the field of sleep and neurodevelopment in infants and children.
What kind of commitment is involved?
Your participation will include three or four study visits (depending on which cohort you enter). Each study visit is 2 days in length, including an overnight inpatient stay for the sleep study. Study visits will occur every 8 months to 1 year for a total participation time of 2 years.
Typical study visit summary:
- Neurodevelopmental assessment
- History and physical examination, including neurological examination
- Blood draw for genetic analysis (at one of 1st visits)
- Blood draw for iron levels and complete blood count (CBC) (at one of 1st visits)
- 20-minute daytime EEG, if possible
- Overnight sleep study (inpatient)
